Widely known for its tranquil and beautiful suburbs, Melbourne (Victoria, Australia) is an inexhaustible source of architectural inspiration. From modern to fully traditional venues, the city keeps expanding its boundaries, enriching the landscape of the suburbs. We’ve stumbled upon Thornbury House, a traditional dwelling with a contemporary extension.
Wonderfully designed by , the Westbury Crescent Residence boasts two different architectural styles, creating a sharp contrast between the old and the new house. “The project is formally manipulated to sculpt atmospheric and functional light into designed spaces thus turning an originally introverted residence inside-out.”
The Edgemoor Residence is located in a post-war neighborhood in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. Recently restored and redesigned by , the house displays plenty of contemporary details, without interfering with its exterior traditional look: “The original corner-lot house was torn down to the foundation walls and first floor deck, and rebuilt as a composition of both modern and traditional forms”. The gable roof is said to establish a dialogue with the nearby buildings.
